What gear do you actually need for a sprint triathlon?

I'm Kevin Andreosky. I've finished three Ironman races and a few ultramarathons, but I got into triathlon to support a friend at their first race. SoftStart Tri is the site I wish they'd had.

You do not need a tri bike, a wetsuit, or a $300 kit for your first sprint. Here is what I tell friends.

FAQ

Do I need a road bike for a sprint triathlon?

No. Any safe bike works. Many first-timers use hybrids or mountain bikes.

Do I need a wetsuit in Florida?

Usually not. Florida water is often warm. Under USA Triathlon rules, wearing a wetsuit above 78.0°F makes you ineligible for age-group awards, and wetsuits are prohibited at 84.0°F and above.

Can I wear headphones?

No. USA Triathlon rules prohibit headphones and headsets of any kind during the race, including bone-conducting ones.
